Introduction

Baqai Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences is one of the Leading Institutions in the field of Pharmacy in Pakistan and is fully committed to impart high quality education in Pharmaceutical Sciences. It comprises of four departments viz; Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy, fully equipped with latest instruments and are run under the supervision and guidance of a very well qualified teaching and research staff. Keeping in view the national needs as well as the internationally recognized standards the institute has designed syllabi, which has all the ingredients to meet the challenges of the 21st Century.

The institute possesses a well maintained library having a large collection of books and all other necessary facilities to train the students on modern lines to acquaint them with the theoretical and practical application covering the entire spectrum of the field of pharmacy.

The Institute is duly recognized by the Pharmacy Council of Pakistan.

Pharmacy along with medicine and nursing forms the backbone of our national health care system. Pharmacy is well established, well recognized and a very important discipline of health sciences. No other educational programs other than that in pharmacy provides the background to understand completely all about drugs. In view of the great demand of pharmacists in the country and abroad it is necessary to establish more institutions to cater the national requirements. At present there are only eight universities in Pakistan where professional education in pharmacy is imparted. The number of pharmacists thus produced every year is scanty and below the demand limits. The seriousness of the problems may be judged with the fact that for populations of one hundred twenty million people nearly six thousand pharmacists are available. According to an official estimate sixty thousand professionals are needed in retail community pharmacy in Pakistan. Baqai Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (B.I.P.S) is another landmark of the Baqai Medical University and the Baqai Foundation.

A comprehensive proposal for the establishment of Baqai Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences was prepared in 1993. Since then the preliminary steps were taken to translate the concept into reality. The proposal finally approved by Board of Governors of Baqai Medical University for establishment in 1996. Accordingly the admissions of B.Pharmacy (first professional) were given in 1996, now we are having three batches to which we impart pharmacy education as per our approved program.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: Baqai Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences will try to fulfill the educational needs of local nationals as well as students of other nationalities. The development of Pharmaceutical Sciences over the last thirty years and tremendous progress in drug research by the academic and educational institutions have led to the reorganization of pharmacy education to the expanding needs of the subject and its application to various professional fields. In fact by virtue of his drug expertise, the pharmacist's role in a country's health care programs has become highly specialized. In the recovery, monitoring and maintenance of individual health on one side and to ensure the quality, safety and efficacy of the most knowledgeable experts on available drugs, drug products and the criteria affecting drug and drug products. The role of pharmacists is expanding with time because of the their expertise and the professional knowledge. Community Pharmacists are the health professionals most accessible to the public. Hospital pharmacists are engaged in the hospitals in promoting the rational prescribing and use of drug and in policy making. They also control hospital management and procurement of drugs to ensure the supply of high quality drugs. Pharmacists play an active role in the pharmaceutical Industries. They are involved in the manufacture and quality assurance, clinical trials, post marketing surveillance and management . They also play an active role in research and development programs of the industry.

Courses

B.Pharmacy Degree

It is a 4 year degree course offered by Baqai Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The eligibility for this course is intermediate science(premedical group) or equivalent examination. Pakistani Nationals residing abroad are also eligible provided they possess the requisite academic qualifications.

BS.c. second division with intermediate science(pre_medical group) is also eligible to apply for admission.

Pharm.D.

This is a two-year course after B.Pharm.

M.Phil

This is a two-year course after B.Pharm.

Ph.D

Minimum period 2 years.
