Baqai Institute of Reproduction and Developmental Sciences
Introduction
Assisted and advanced reproductive techniques are in great demands in developing countries because of the importance of the family. BIRDS was founded by Prof. Dr. Mrs Zahida Baqai in 1991. It has developed into the most successful unit in Pakistan dealing with In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Intra Cytoplasm Sperm Injection (ICSI) and produces world class results in very poor prognostic older patients. In 2000 a take home baby rate of 35% was recorded (World averages are about 20%). And in 2001 53.7% pregnancies have been achieved and our 100th live birth is imminent. The platform for this success is blast cyst transfer but the recent results have been achieved by concentrating on quality of the ovum prior to the stimulatory protocol. This involves normalization of stress, weight and any gynecological pathology. The commonest interfering factors involve insulin resistance and autoimmune disease.
Recently a major emphasis has been placed on factors involved in male infertility. Cost containment is important and minimal or no stimulation protocols are to be introduced in the near future.
